      Wild Ones

      July 8, 2015

Wild Ones’ has released a perfect new single just in time for summer. Portland, Oregon natives, Wild Ones, exude all things chill. Their latest release is just a teaser for their upcoming EP, Heatwave. Their irresistible pop sound is led by funky bass and a grooving beat. Singer Danielle Sullivan’s vocals are pure and calming, and evoke images of humid coastal nights. This track, Show Me Islands, makes us want to dance on the beach, or get in the car and cruise up the 101. Sullivan describes the EP as following stories of “female characters [who] are fierce and brave.” Show Me Islands reveals — through both lyrics and instrumentals — themes we know and love: growing up, finding our place, and seeking escape. One listen, and you’ll get the picture. Stay tuned for the EP, Heatwave, coming to a pool or ocean near you on August 14th.

      Chancius

      December 17, 2014

As you now know, OurDeadRadio is based out of Southern California, but every time we get a submission from Brooklyn, it’s pure gold. Chancius is an alternative, dream-pop artist who has developed a new album, ‘Bando,’ with a Sci-Fi appeal. Chancius’ concept for the album centers on the story of a man fighting for his life and taking risks; philosophical questions regarding humanity’s purpose and the uses of modern machinery are weaved into this thought-provoking soundscape or “alternative rock opera.” In our featured track, “A Piece of You Wherever I Go,” the chorus lyrics serve as a gentle reminder: “Don’t forget to feel okay, don’t forget to feel alright, don’t forget to touch the moon, touch the stars, feel it all tonight.” Check out this stunning song from Chancius’ new album, and catch the rest of his story on Soundcloud.

      BROODS

      August 14, 2014

New Zealand’s latest sibling duo, BROODS, has released another single, “Mother & Father.” At ages 20 and 22, their layered and unique sounds produced their debut single, “Bridges.” This resonating initial track procured a following — a well-deserved one. BROODS tracks soar somewhere beyond indie-pop; their songs are a distinct brand of songwriting that sweetly spins musical stories, landing squarely, and at times harshly, on the pangs and ponderings of Gen Y. Our featured track showcases clear vocals, heartfelt lyrics, and a hypnotic melody that creates a genuine sense of nostalgia. Enjoy “Mother & Father” and keep an eye out for BROODS full album, Evergreen, expected early October.

      The Junglecats

      July 12, 2014

If you’ve ever sat around wishing someone would meld the modern, unforgivably cool sounds of Cold War Kids with the classic 60’s sounds of The Kinks and The Zombies, wish no more. Long Beach’s own Junglecats have just released their debut album, “Nowhere Else To Be” which exudes bluesy energy and an unforgivable temper that is both delectably vicious and earnestly poignant. The album is an impressive synthesis of funky sexiness (“Out On The Farm”), sensitive surf-rock (“The Sea And The Sky”) and translucent joviality (“Do The Whatevah”). Our featured track, “Got My Rhythm,” is vibrant and danceable. Led by groovy organ and reinforced with catchy backup vocals, this song stands true as the reverberant essence of the J-Cats: unvarnished sounds that compliment the roots of rock and roll. Someone once said Los Angeles is a true paradise. Someone else once said Los Angeles is a vortex of freeways and pollution. But for Daniel J. W!shington, Los Angeles has been the perfect setting for the past three years as he’s created a new EP, “Qontaqt.” Recorded in Boston, Philadelphia, Oxnard, and Los Angeles, these songs reflect the learning curve of “being more like ones self.” According to W!shington, the tracks explore, observe, and reveal his developing artistry in his new habitat of Southern California. Our featured track, “Newspaper Rock,” emphasizes W!shington’s ability to create fresh sounds. The instruments are layered and interesting; the lyrics are witty and analytical. In “Newspaper Rock,” W!shington pledges allegiance to California as he sings, “We stay cold on the east coast and stay winning on the west.” He also expresses his interests in perspectives of society, image, and truth: “We all question freedom, we all got our own way to redefine. Oh I wanna hear the thoughts of all in my community…” We’re super stoked to share this local submission, so give the track a spin, and check out DJW’s other tracks (especially “I Tried”) on his site.

      Jilted John

      June 24, 2014

The setting: a pub in Dublin. A steady stream of American music is sung by the man of the hour at the front of the bar. All he has is a guitar and a microphone. He plays everything from Bob Marley to Bruce Springsteen until his acoustic version of an English punk song breaks the familiar stream of tunes. We — myself and ODR’s talented web designer — had to know who the artist was. Like the obnoxious Americans we are, we rushed up to his little stage with our Guinness and Bulmers and anxiously asked what the last song was called. “Jilted John,” he replied. “Song’s called Jilted John, an’ the band’s called Jilted John.” Alright, we’ll take it. That night, stumbling through the stone streets of Temple Bar back to our little room in the early AM, we couldn’t help but sing “Gordon is a moron” over and over again. This song, I’ve now learned, was recorded in 1978 by the brilliance of Manchester’s Graham Fellows. It’s a punk-pop hybrid. The lyrics? Pure brash punk. The instrumentals? Early seventies pop with driving syncopated percussion. Saturated in attitude, adolescent bitterness, and, of course, cheeky Brit humor, this one is timeless.

Brisbane’s newest songwriters are starting a revolution of their own. The Furrs are a 5-piece band creating rock ‘n roll with a radical edge. “Get On Your Horse” plunges straight into unforgiving electric guitar and clear, earnest lyrics. The bad-ass front-woman, Gabriella, sings, “well we talk of revolutions and praise our contributions, to the mediocrity telling us what to be. Well we don’t know when it started, but we idolised the market; we chased after the departed, through the frames of the brave-hearted.” This track features powerful lyrics thrown into a sonic bricolage of varying genres and historical motivation. You’ll be singing along in no time. OurDeadRadio salutes The Furrs and their rebellious music. Keep an ear out for The Furrs’ upcoming EP, and get ready to ride.

“Human error on a digital platform.” That’s how 22-year-old New Yorker, Barry Kantro, describes his new analog bedroom project, Caladan. His EP, Stimuli, is messy, gloomy, and very electronic. Enamored by the sound and style of a Casitone MT-41 discovered at a Salvation Army, Kantro started recording, and has produced some raw tracks that are reminiscent of the hazy melancholic trials of early Interpol. Sylvan Esso just released another great track. Not too long ago, we posted “Hey Mami,” and this new single, “Coffee” might be an even more addictive tune. This featured track rises with unique electro-blips, a gentle beat, and sweet chimes. Amelia Meath’s vocals shine as she gently paints a sonic image of youthful affection. She sings, “Wild winters, warm coffee, mom’s gone, do you love me?” Nick Sanborn’s modern elements meld perfectly to create a song that radiates with originality and sophistication. The Casual Section

      January 25, 2014

When life gives you winter, The Casual Section gives you punk. Perfectly raw, unpolished punk. This week, our featured song was submitted by a quartet from London who blend rock, funk, and punk genres to create a rough, energetic sound. They consider themselves the “mongrel dog” of London’s live music scene, but here at OurDeadRadio, we don’t think that’s a bad thing. The Casual Section recently recorded their EP, Might As Well, which showcases their live energy. The EP was recorded in a day. Yes, seven tracks, one day. This gives the EP a dynamically brash sound. Basically, it’s awesome. Take a listen to our featured track, “No Justice.” With lyrics like, “chewing gum on the bottom of my big Nike, that weed man is gonna fuck up your head, I would say live your life but you’re already dead…” this track, and the rest of the EP is just enough punk to hold you over until summer, or longer. Enjoy!

OurDeadRadio received a great submission from a 3-piece band out of Minneapolis last month. They’ve just released a self-produced EP, and we’re stoked they shared it with us. Through The Forest’s alternative sound is relaxed and sophisticated, and is greatly influenced by Radiohead and Coldplay. We dig the jazzy sound on our featured track, “Is It Really Worth It?” The track echoes of Thom Yorke, as singer Tom Robin calls, “Sometimes you’re right, sometimes you’re wrong, sometimes you’ll never know.” Check out the rest of the EP, layered with bass from Alex Gill and drums by Nick Smith on Through The Forest’s Bandcamp page.

      Vieja Viajes

      January 3, 2014

We’re pretty stoked about this submission. Vieja Viajes of Cleveland Ohio is truly something different. The DIY noise pop project of Matt McCroskey released a *free* EP “Nostrils of the Holy” this summer, but we think it’s just as interesting as a winter soundtrack. Our featured track, “Que Three El Five One” begins with piercing distorted guitar, and continues with dynamic bass and layers of elevating percussion. This song is a truly unique hybrid, as McCroskey’s muffled vocals give the track a post-punk feel. His barely perceptible lyrics croon, “I’ve waited too long for your kiss, I’ve waited too long for this and I don’t want you to be another one that I miss.” Sampled pieces, including a section of dialogue, establish this song as a sonic mosaic of awesomeness. “I am music. I am a whistleblower for peace. I am Naomi Pilgrim.” Indeed. Naomi Pilgrim is a fresh artist with a sweet voice and punchy lyrics. She was born in Barbados and raised in Sweden; her experiences immersed in different cultures contribute to her eclectic perspective on modern pop. She’s worked with Lykki Li as a backup singer and brilliantly plays with genres and edgy themes in her new release “No Gun.” The track begins with deep sonic bass, R&B-inspired beats and heavily reverbed electronic blips. Pilgrim’s vocals are captivating. She weaves a lyrical story and cleverly reveals an emotional journey. She plays with the concept of have/have-not and establishes examples of heavy situational irony in the sparkling verses. Her beautiful voice pierces through the grooving instrumentals as she sings “I found my soul mate but we’re screwing just for fun, Made it to the club but the band was done… I memorized the Bible but there was no God, I made a bargain but the whole thing was a fraud.” Her musical commentary is strong and admirable, her brilliant melodic creation is more than catchy. Naomi Pilgrim is a force to keep an eye on. Until then, listen to “No Gun” and revel in her musical presentation of life.

Starting as an underground rapper from Stockholm, Mapei (Jaqueline Cummings) recently released a captivating rap/pop fusion single. In this featured track, “Don’t Wait,” Mapei moves through a memorable melody paralleled by spacey-electronic notes. She sings, “If It wasn’t for you, I’d be alone. If it wasn’t for you, I’d be on my own.” The sunshiny bridge and synth voices give the tune a playful perspective: “No matter where you’re at no worry I’ll be there, no one’s got your back like I do… When I shine you shine always…” This uplifting, fresh take on a love song can counter any pissy mood — with snaps, rolling percussion, and driving beat, “Don’t Wait” will having you pressing replay in no time.

Meghan Remy is a solo female force with an adoration for 60’s bubblegum pop. With a progressive perspective toward “DIY” tracks, U.S. Girls evokes a playfully nostaligic, lo-fi memory of honest oldies with a feminist twist. Our featured track, “28 Days” is about a certain monthly function that ladies can exclusively relate to (check out the super-cool music video here). In an interview with Rookie Magazine, Remy discusses how the song is about celebration. She says, “We shouldn’t be ashamed of the fact that our bodies are in sync with the moon and are practically magic! We should celebrate it; we should also complain and confide freely with others…” So, yes. If you were wondering if the charmingly sentimental voice of this crunchy track is completely rad, then the answer is YES. Crusier’s new release, “Kidnap Me” is 80% modern, über-catchy pop, and 20% borderline creepy adoration. Here at OurDeadRadio, we love creepy adoration. Cruiser began in Philadelphia as Andy States’ bedroom recording project. Now, as a quartet, Cruiser is establishing an eternally summery identity in the indie-pop world. “Kidnap Me” is immediately playful — and the track’s hook boasts a severe bite: ‘Shackle me up and lock it, I could live in your pocket. Earlier this month, Detroit native Alex Winston released a powerful and haunting new single, “101 Vultures.” Following her 2012 album debut, Winston is now creating some newly dynamic, explicit fatale-esque material. In this new track, Winson battles between strength and weakness, innocence and rage, and love and oppression through an echoey chamber of slow pop goodness. ‘In a sea of motherfuckers, man, you were no salvation, face it. Why’d you go and leave me to the vultures?’ In the regretful bridge of the song she sings, ‘We could have done better, we should have done better….’ Better than this deep cut? We’re not so sure. Surf Curse

      August 8, 2013

The Reno-based duet, Surf Curse, has released a note-worthy album of lo-fi, beachy punk pop. Think Oberhofer + Wavves + a little extra grunge. This track, “Goth Babe,” is so sweet and raw and catchy: ‘I want a goth babe in my life, I want someone I can bite, I want to listen to The Cure, I want to tell you that I’m yours…’ The lyrics are playful and clever, the melody is simple and surfy. Give this track a spin and check out our other fav song, “Freaks,” from their most recent album, Buds.

      Temples

      August 1, 2013

British rockers, Temples, make psychedelic Beatles-esque rock. “Shelter Song,” a recently released danceable track, references long summer days, The Twilight Zone, and dreamy pursuits of love. The song features a variety of influences, but the melodious hooks present a modern pop sound — an energizing approach to classic 60’s psych-rock. Take a listen and get weird.

This Michigan artist claims if “you like pizza or puppies or pizza puppies, you’ll probably like fthrsn.” fthrsn (pronounced “father son”) makes lo-fi bedroom pop that deftly picks up tempo mid-song. The motown/soul influenced tracks feature reflective lyrics like “I’m just a little kid who lives in my head…” Take a listen.

      Jav Rivera

      July 29, 2013

We recently received a great submission from a Nicaraguan artist, Jav Rivera. Take a listen to “Love Tune,” a sweet acoustic track with a raw, unpolished sound. Much of his album, Almost Alive, features gentle ambient tracks with cinematic elements. Many of his songs have refreshingly unconventional structures, a uniqueness we always appreciate at OurDeadRadio. Give this track a try and check out the rest of his tunes on Bandcamp.

Christopher Laufman has a very unique songwriting style. There’s so much going on — the beat, melody and instrumentals are all a little strange — but it somehow works. This pop track features a dark groove, a strange reoccurring horn-like “alarm” sound, and utilizes some R&B influences as well. Listen.

      Jonathan Rado

      July 23, 2013

Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado, has recently released a few singles from his upcoming solo album. Surprisingly (or not surprisingly), they are as catchy and as genius has his Foxygen work. Give “Hand in Mine” a listen — it’s a gauzy 60’s duet, reminiscent of the sweet, quirky love Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros conveys. Look for the full album, Law and Order in early September.

Worcestershire’s Astronomyy is the brilliant project of a mysterious songsmith that focuses on “space guitar” sounds — which are really cool, considering they’re combined with hip-hop and R&B elements. “Things I’d Do For U” is a new sexy release that’s worth a listen, or two, or three…

      Gregory Alan Isakov

      July 14, 2013

Gregory Alan Isakov’s voice has an exceptional quality that beautifully targets raw emotion. His delicate folk talent is evident through his latest album, “The Weatherman.” It’s melancholy and wise. Go gaze at the stars on a warm night while you listen to this. Or listen and find something better to do than stargaze. Whatever. His music is just beautiful and you know it.

      July 10, 2013

PAPA’s new single, “If You’re My Girl, Then I’m Your Man” is a sweet tune, complete with ooo’s and heavy reverb. The simple story of “I love you, if you love me” is told through their classic pop/rock sound. The chorus sings, “I just want to be your man, fuck my past, forget your plans.”
Emotion + explicits = a confident, endearing song.

Bloc Party’s new single release, “Ratchet” demonstrates the continuing drive of the candidly impressive musical ability of the quartet; it’s a groovy, danceable track infused with attitude. Singer, Kele Okereke, chants in a possibly playful, possibly mocking sense: ‘make it loud, make it proud, make it count, we go, go ratchet.’ The cleverness of the lyrics and the catchiness of the tune is a perfect tease for what is yet to come later this summer on the full EP. Nick Waterhouse

      July 4, 2013

Nick Waterhouse released an album last year that has just made it’s way to the ears of ODR. We admit, this is a late discovery. But trust — it’s good. Employing sexy saxophone, tambourine and soulful back-up singers, this song sounds like the mind-blowing combination of Ray Charles and The Black Keys. A mix of influences creates one fantastic sound, evoking many styles born in the past: Soul. Funk. Blues. R&B and Rock. Try out the track “(If) You Want Trouble” and get your 50’s groove on.

      by

      Baths

      June 12, 2013

The new Baths album features great dark, electro-pop. Check out the interesting artistry on Baths’ sophomore album, Obsidian. Los-Angeles based Will Wiesenfeld uses electronic blips, a variety of instruments, and often staggeringly pained – yet captivating – lyrical content. “Ossuary” is a standout track, taking on an aggressive start and easing into a sweet melody with an energetic beat and assured tone. Wiesenfeld sings, ‘Once interred, in turn to turn to bone, fate unseen, kiss the stone. You hope that where you are, that you’re not alone.’ Faintly Pinback-ish and playful, “Ossuary” is one of the faster-paced tracks in this emotional collection.
